Negro “Spirituals” have been forming
recently a part of the weekly lunch-hour musical programs at SouthwarkCathedral of London. These “spontaneous
outbursts of intense religious feeling at camp meetings and revivalist
gatherings” have made an appeal to the working people comprising a large part
of the attendance of the programs; and among the most popular have been “SwingLow, Sweet Chariot,” “By and By,” “Balm in Gilead” and “Were You There?”
